5. Halal Information Disclaimer

THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT SECTION OF THESE TERMS. PLEASE READ IT CAREFULLY.

5.1 Not a Certification Authority

Ummaly is NOT a halal certification body, halal authority, or religious advisory service. We do not issue halal certificates. The halal status information displayed on the Platform is provided as a technological convenience tool for GUIDANCE PURPOSES ONLY and must not be treated as a definitive, authoritative, or legally binding halal certification or religious ruling (fatwa).

5.2 No Guarantee of Accuracy

Halal assessments shown on the Platform are derived from multiple automated sources including:

  • Third-party ingredient databases (Open Food Facts, USDA FDC)
  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning models
  • Rule-based ingredient analysis algorithms
  • Third-party halal databases and APIs
  • Community-contributed data

We make reasonable efforts to provide helpful information, but we cannot and do not guarantee that any halal assessment is accurate, complete, current, or free from error. Product formulations change without notice. Databases may contain inaccuracies. AI models can and do make mistakes. Cross-contamination, manufacturing processes, and supply chain factors are not detectable by ingredient analysis alone.

5.3 AI Limitations

The Platform uses artificial intelligence including trained machine learning models and large language models (LLMs) to analyse ingredients. These AI systems:

  • Are probabilistic, not deterministic — they provide confidence scores, not certainties
  • May misclassify ingredients, particularly novel, uncommon, or ambiguously named ones
  • Cannot detect undeclared ingredients, cross-contamination, or processing methods
  • May produce different results for the same product at different times
  • Are trained on data that may contain biases or errors

A “Halal” result from our AI does not constitute a halal certification. A “Conditional” or “Unknown” result does not necessarily mean a product is haram.

5.4 Your Sole Responsibility

YOU ARE SOLELY RESPONSIBLE for making your own halal dietary decisions.

Before consuming any product, you should:

  1. Read the product's ingredient label yourself
  2. Check for recognised halal certification logos on the packaging
  3. Contact the manufacturer directly if in doubt
  4. Consult a qualified Islamic scholar or halal certification authority for ambiguous cases
  5. Consider your personal school of thought (madhab) and level of strictness

By using the barcode scanner or any halal assessment feature, you acknowledge and agree that you are making your own independent decision about whether to consume a product, and that Ummaly's assessment is merely one data point among many that you may consider.

5.5 No Liability for Dietary Decisions

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Ummaly Ltd, its directors, employees, and affiliates shall NOT be liable for any loss, harm, illness, allergic reaction, religious concern, or damage of any kind arising from your reliance on halal information provided by the Platform. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Consuming a product that was assessed as “Halal” but which you later determine to be unsuitable
  • Avoiding a product that was assessed as “Haram” or “Conditional” but which is in fact halal
  • Any physical, emotional, spiritual, or financial harm arising from use of the Platform's halal features

5.6 Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Ummaly Ltd from any claims, damages, or expenses arising from your dietary decisions made using information from the Platform.

6. Product Flagging

Users may flag products they believe have been incorrectly assessed. Flags are reviewed and may be used to improve the accuracy of our analysis. By submitting a flag, you agree that your submission may be used to improve the Platform. You must not submit false or misleading product reports or abuse the flagging system.

7. Restaurant Listings

7.1 Not Verified by Ummaly

Restaurant listings, halal indicators, and halal likelihood scores shown on the Platform are generated using:

  • Publicly available data from Google Maps and other third-party sources
  • Algorithmic analysis of cuisine type, restaurant name, and available metadata
  • User-contributed reports and ratings

We DO NOT independently inspect, audit, verify, or certify any restaurant's halal practices. A “halal” indicator or high halal score does not mean the restaurant is halal-certified or that all menu items are halal.

7.2 Your Responsibility

Before dining at any restaurant discovered through the Platform, you should:

  • Contact the restaurant directly to confirm their halal status
  • Ask about their halal certification, supplier chain, and preparation methods
  • Check for recognised halal certification displayed at the premises
  • Use your own judgement based on your personal standards

Ummaly Ltd shall not be liable for any loss or harm arising from dining at a restaurant discovered through the Platform, regardless of any halal score or indicator displayed.

8. User Content & Conduct

You agree not to:

  • Use the Platform for any unlawful purpose
  • Attempt to reverse-engineer, decompile, or hack the Platform
  • Submit false or misleading product reports or flags
  • Abuse the flagging system or harass other users
  • Use automated tools to scrape data from the Platform
  • Impersonate any person or entity

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms.

9. Third-Party Services

The Platform integrates with third-party services including Google Maps, Firebase, Open Food Facts, and payment processors. Your use of these services is subject to their respective terms and privacy policies. We are not responsible for the availability or accuracy of third-party services.

10. Intellectual Property

All content, design, code, and branding on the Platform are owned by Ummaly Ltd or our licensors. You may not copy, modify, distribute, or create derivative works without our written permission.

11. Liability Limitations

To the maximum extent permitted by law:

  • The Platform is provided “as is” without warranties of any kind
  • We are not liable for any dietary harm resulting from reliance on halal information provided by the Platform
  • We are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages
  • Our total liability shall not exceed the amount you paid for the Platform in the preceding 12 months

12. Changes to Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be communicated through the Platform. Your continued use after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.

13. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
