Purpose-Built AI

HalalAI — Trained for the Ummah

At the heart of Ummaly is HalalAI— a custom-trained 354-million parameter machine learning model built specifically for halal ingredient classification. This isn't a generic AI with a halal prompt — it's a GPT-2 Medium architecture fine-tuned from scratch on over 7,600 training examples covering 3,329 verified ingredients.

The model was trained by Muslims who understand the nuances of Islamic dietary law — from obvious haram ingredients like pork and alcohol, to subtle cases like E-codes derived from animal sources, hidden gelatine in processed foods, and ingredients with ambiguous origins that require the "mashbooh" (doubtful) classification.

Pipeline

Multi-Tier Verification Pipeline

HalalAI doesn't work alone. Every product scan passes through a rigorous 5-tier verification pipeline designed so that no single point of failure can produce a wrong result:

Tier 1

OCR Ingredient Extraction

Scans and extracts ingredient text from product packaging using optical character recognition.

Tier 2

Certified Halal Database Lookup

Cross-references the product against known halal-certified databases including ITS Halal.

Tier 3

Rule Engine

Pattern-matches for known E-codes, alcohol terms, and haram indicators using a curated rule set covering 45+ international alcohol terms.

Tier 4

HalalAI + RAG Vector Search

The fine-tuned neural network classifies each ingredient with a confidence score, running in parallel with retrieval-augmented generation for additional context.

Tier 5

AI Adjudicator

A reasoning layer that synthesises all signals, applies regional and contextual rules, and produces the final confidence-scored verdict.

Continuous Improvement

HalalAI is never "finished". We continuously improve the model through:

  • Edge case training — real-world ingredients that confused the model get reviewed, labelled, and added to the training dataset
  • Community product flags — users can flag incorrect results, creating a human-in-the-loop feedback pipeline
  • Expert review — flagged cases are reviewed by humans with Islamic dietary knowledge before being incorporated
  • Dataset expansion — v2 added 274 new haram entries covering international pork products, hidden gelatine, blood products, and forbidden animals

Important: HalalAI is a guidance tool, not a certification body. It provides confidence-scored assessments to help you make informed decisions, but it should not be treated as a definitive religious ruling. When in doubt, consult a qualified Islamic scholar.
